[04 Sep 2009|09:31pm]
The world is all blurry, but that's normal since I had an eye examine this afternoon. They used the strong eye drops. According to the doc they won't wear all the way off until around noon tomorrow. I suspect more of my sinus pain was eye strain than I thought, it was rather relaxing to not be able to focus on things and even with my current classes it was hard to read. It's starting to wear off though.

New glasses in a week though.

I think the fog this morning was effecting peoples' brains. There were several drivers on the commute in that were doing slightly strange things. Nothing too dangerous, but I definitely had to pay attention.

Now why didn't I have a set of these growing up? They would have made childhood even better!

For sirinde,

Yes, they did find out that they were following themselves and not Woozles before going home for lunch.

On a side note, I have no idea why the spell checker doesn't recognize the word woozle.

My new copy of the piano reduction of Fresh Aire I got here this weekend and I had a chance to sit down at the piano with it today. Amazingly, not all of the muscle memory was gone. Combined with the familiarity with the music and a bit of the rather rusty sight reading skills and I mostly sounded like I knew what I was doing. With a bit of work I should be able to get some control and finger strength back. I am quite pleased.

I may be lynched for saying it, but I'll miss the snow when it's all gone. Even more than the tempature, the white stuff on the ground makes it feel like winter to me. Even as much as the darkness of the season can get to me at times, I still enjoy winter. The juxtaposition of the shorter days, the cold, the snow and everything else just makes the other seasons better. The warmth and colors of summer just make the simplicity of the snowscape more beautiful too. It works both ways.

Car Fun [20 Dec 2008|06:31pm]
Well, the car is at the shop, having bit-by-bit stopped working over the course of a couple miles. When it finally stopped, it was almost at the top of the hill facing up, so I waited for a break in traffic and let it roll back and into the other lane doing something like a 3-point turn to be facing downhill again. That got me more out of the way of traffic. Then I called the tow truck.

With luck, its the battery. Its more likely to be the alternator. Possibly something in the wiring, but I hope not.

Adventure [13 Dec 2008|06:52pm]
Getting to the farmers market this morning was quite an adventure.

I drove down Smith Level, just like normal. The "Road Closed" signs just under the 54 bridge were interesting but not too worrying until I got close enough to read the little tacked on bit saying, "Main Street." Wait. Main street is up over the top of the hill...at which point I had to decide to go left and turn onto 54 or right onto Merrit Mill Rd.

Foolishly, I chose right. I figured I go up Merrit Mill and then back into Carrboro and around whatever had the street blocked. Astute people (especially ones who can look at a local calendar) may have realized that this was not a good plan. I -- not being especially astute first thing in the morning -- did not realize it, but did not discover this yet since Merrit Mill Rd was blocked by a traffic accident. The ambulance was just pulling away and the two cars and assorted police were still blocking three of the four lanes. (I never did figure out how the accident happened since the SUV was sitting more or less sideways across the street at a point where there aren't any side streets or driveways and the sedan had t-boned it.) The Police were directing traffic alternating through the remaining lane. That took a few more minutes.

Once I got past that, and got to the top of the hill and the intersection with Cameron the traffic (already heavy from the detour) was backed up again do to a train on the train tracks. I've known that they to use those tracks, but I've never seen one on that stretch before. That took a couple minutes. After the train past, I got close enough to see that the street was blocked going straight as well. Back to that whole bad plan idea. Not having a choice, I turned right along with the rest of the traffic, and got to drive for several blocks along Cameron at 15 mph. Since it looked like the congestion ahead was even worse, I dived onto the next side street and got the first look at the Christmas parade that was causing the trek.

I turned around and having no better direction to go, I headed back on Cameron and down Merritt Mill again. You would think I'd have learned the first time. This time the tow trucks were there and moving the wrecks apart. The officer directing traffic at my end let all of the cars in front of me through before they started, and stopped our line at me so I had a nice view of the tow trucks doing there thing, which took about 10 minutes. Interesting, but not the farmers market.

Once I was past the accident I took the option I should have taken in the first place and got on 54 heading west. The traffic was heavy for a Saturday morning but thats to be expected. There were no further obstacles until I got off onto Jones Ferry where a twit was trying to turn left where they really shouldn't have been. Once past him I got to the street that runs in front of the farmers market to find that they were directing all of the traffic past the market hence blocking access to 90 of the parking normally used by people going to the market. With several minutes of crawling along I was able to get into the town hall parking lot and found a spot -- demonstrating the perversity of the universe -- right next to the entrance to the market, as close as it was possible to park without driving onto the grass.

Normal trip time: maybe 5 minutes.

This time: 35 minutes.

Question for the locals:

A friend needs a cheap apartment that takes dogs (she has two) that would be available as soon as possible. Anyone have any suggestions or possibilities?

Pie in the Sky [19 Oct 2008|01:29am]
Between the unexpected game of Settlers and the unexpected conversation, it was a good evening.

So, a question that came up in the conversation: everyone talks about pie in the sky, but what kind of pie is it? Most pie fillings are heavier than air, after all.

Also, where does one find anti-gravity pie tins?

I meant to mention it at K'Berg tonight and forgot. Opus is going away again. It sounds like this time is for good.

Weird dreams followed by deeply upsetting ones. A good time to wander around the internet for a little while before going back to bed.

For the several that I've mentioned them to since getting back from DragonCon, here are the rules for the Robot Battles that I got to see there. Note especially the "bad idea" rule, and the "frankenstein" rule.

Found a neat video of a Norwegian knighting ceremony. The new knight is the honorary colonel-in-chief of the Kings Guard and its fun to see him reviewing the troops.

(No really, it is! Watch to the end!)

Theres a new blog thats going to be starting tomorrow -- by George Orwell.

The Orwell Prize is going to be posting Orwell's diaries, starting with Aug 8, 1938. Should be a lot of fun to read.

The Eno fest was wonderful fun. Girlyman was as awesome as always. Next year, it'd vote for less humidity though.

Some random notes [26 Jun 2008|12:59pm]
Subtitled, Things I have learned in the last day or so.

One of my Polka Dot Plants is blooming. I didn't know they could bloom though in retrospect they'd almost have to. I'd just never thought about it. I'm very excited. (And very easily excited.)

When partitioning a hard drive to hot add to an existing raid1, cylinder size is important. Silly thing is, neither drive actually exists, they're both virtual drives that I'm using to test how to so some things. Also, grub is cool but grubs documentation is not.

Drinking years old amaretto can be hard on one.

Dusk is the time for housecats to prowl. Not like this is news, but good grief I saw a lot of them last night.
